All the ins and outs
Richard has over thirty years’ experience in the insurance industry, which primarily focused on aviation insurance. His career started as a Lloyds Broker initially as a Claims Handler then moving onto International Placing. From there he progressed to HSBC as a Consultant headquartered out of London but spending considerable time operating out of Johannesburg in a roving role, throughout Africa. The Johannesburg base subsequently resulted in his appointment in 2005 as Head of Aviation at a Johannesburg based brokerage.
A New Company
Over the next 17 years the aviation business grew ten-fold and involved travelling extensively throughout Africa, meeting entrepreneurial and innovative clients, whilst sharing in their trials, tribulations, and successes. This ultimately motivated the birth of Calmer, a niche broker that is solution driven, result orientated and above all, listens.
Take Off
Calmer Insurance Brokers was launched in May 2022, by its founder and CEO, Richard Turner, as an independent short term commercial insurance broker, with a special emphasis on Aviation Insurance.
The Team Expands
Lebo has worked as a Senior Aviation Insurance Administrator for the last 9 years and before that was a short term commercial insurance administrator for a further 10 years. She brings to the team not only a wealth of experience and expertise but also a fabulous sense of humour
And Then Expands Some More
As Calmers numbers grew so did our need for a Head of Finance and Compliance, resulting in the appointment of a Tilly Pillay. Tilly brings a wealth of experience, initially 12 years as an Auditor, subsequently 20 years plus as a Director / CFO of a diverse group of blue-chip companies but most importantly her one hour recently logged as a Student Pilot.
